I own a 2013 Toyota Highlander with 95k miles and a 2016 Lexus RX 350 with 55k miles. Do I have to change out the transmission filter when I replace the ATF fluid or can I just replace the fluid only?
I’m trying to see if I can get away from taking of the whole transmission cover. Thanks!
I would change the filter too if you change the ATF fluid.
That's like asking "Do I need to change the oil filter?" Yes, I highly recommend changing out the filter as per a proper transmission service. Having good fluid is one thing, and preventing gunk from clogging up the valve body is another thing.
The reason I ask is because Scotty has said that most Lexus only have a “ metal screen “ for a filter. Therefore, the need to take off the transmission cover is becomes unnecessary. Just want to confirm if his recommendation still stands?
