How do I fix catalytic converter trouble code P0420

I have a Cadillac SRX 2011 with a 3.0  Engine V6. The engine light is on and it is throwing a P0420 Code. I was told by my mechanic that I would need to change the catalytic converter out. Any suggestions on what to check for? I have seen forms that say I can change the O2 sensor etc. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you.
