So my father gave me a Pontiac fireball 1989 5.0 formula. Now I’m just wondering what the gears mean because it has the obvious P-R-N then it has a D inside another D so two D or double D however it’s called that’s why I’m here asking if You know what it means or the purpose of it then it just has regular old drive-D last it has 2 then 1 what are those for?

Look up the owner's manual on line to get the facts.

The "D inside the D" is probably overdrive. The 4-speed transmissions in use at that time typically were 3-speed plus 4th gear overdrive. In that case, the regular "D" would prevent overdrive from engaging when it's not desired (like hilly driving conditions) and "D in a D" would yield all gear ratios.
