[Solved] Automatic transmission starts in 2nd gear

My 2012 Cadillac CTS-V (automatic) defaults to starting in second gear (from the factory) for a small fuel savings. Does that cause excessive wear on the second gear? How does this mode affect the usual operation of the torque converter and first gear? If I select "sport mode" the car starts in first gear from a full stop and I am wondering if it is better for the longevity of the transmission to make use of the lowest gear ratio every time.

If this is something from the factory, it is designed by engineers, so I would assume they knew the reason and there is no need to worry about it.

Thank you!
