Why is the avalon so much nicer and have so many more options than the camry, yet has a lower resale value?

The Avalon is a good reliable sedan; it’s just that it is overlooked (underrated) by people shopping for cars (and also more expensive). That and the fact that demand is not as high as a Camry on the used car market contribute to its value sinking a little below the Camry’s.

First of all in my market they go for the same used after 10 years of age
Second of all, a "luxury" large car will depreciate more than a midsize family car

The Avalons are not as popular as the Camry. And the more expensive the vehicle, the higher the depreciation in most cases.
