AWD vs RWD...safety benefits

Hello all.

My wife wants to replace her Kia Stinger GT2 AWD with the 2022 GT2 model.  It's not negotiable.  She loves the car.

Here in Florida we deal with some heavy rains at times.  In terms of her safety, would be better to get the AWD again, or should we save some money and go with the RWD?

And would you lease it rather than buy since it's a Kia?

Thanks for the advice.

You don't need AWD in Florida

Where you live go with RWD.  Also, given Kia track record I strongly recommend to lease it only.

Definitely lease.

You do get heavy rain there, but with no snow or ice....I'd save the money and go RWD.

In general, AWD tends to have more predictable handling, especially on slippery surfaces.  RWD is prone to oversteer, which makes cars like the Miata and BRZ and Mustang so fun to drive but can get you into trouble if you try to put down too much power in bad conditions.

but that said, once a person gets used to the handling (and assuming they drive like a sane person) there is minimal difference in safety.  This is particularly true in an area like Florida that is generally flat and ice-free.  (Someplace like Colorado, most people are gonna prefer AWD, but it probably isn’t worth the premium in FL.)

Thank you all for the thoughtful replies.!

Definitely lease.  Awd is safer but you really don't need that in Florida.

Hi. May I suggest that instead of repeating other answers exactly, you just give them an upvote. There's no need to add redundant answers to a question.
