Hi there Scotty i have a 2006 gmc sierra 1500 5.3, my question is what would cause the battery voltage gauge to sometimes go above 14 and the headlights and dash kind of flicker or dim, then go back to normal, I've thought about the alternator but I wanted to ask for your opinion thank you.

voltage above 14V is normal. It can even go as high as 15.5V
But you shouldn't be getting the fluctuations your describe. Check the condition of the accessory belt in case it's slipping.
The alternator might be failing. You could try slipping off the belt, turning the pulley by hand and feeling for resistance.
Try to determine if the dimming coincides with a load being switched on, such as A/C compressor.
