I'm currently on a budget of $2500-3000 for a vehicle. Don't really have a preference for rather it's an SUV, sedan ect. What would be the best to try and look out for when it comes to makes and models?
That's not much to work with. Forget SUVs, they are in demand and go for a premium price. Probably an old Corolla or Civic with cosmetic issues would be the best bet. Be sure to avoid problem models and have a good mechanic check out any prospects before purchase.

@chucktobias has the right answer with corolla/civic, although I think you can expect either of those models at your price point to be pretty rough.
But the thing is to do your homework before you pay. Spend a couple hundred $ on an inspection. In that price range, it's all about condition and maintenance. Keep an open mind... A PT Cruiser that's been well cared for and passes inspection is better than a Civic with a bad head gasket or excessive blow-by.
Adding to @chucktobias comment this is a video by Scotty on Corolla and Civic years to buy and/or avoid:
