Hey scotty and the community. I have a 1985 500sel (European import) which was the fastest sedan of the world in its time. My original sparkplugs were discontinued bosch released a "upgraded" plug that lowers my performance because of the resistor. The 15 year old bosch plugs ran better then the new ones. Top speed on the dyno was 115 when the old plugs pushed it to 140mph  What is your recommended material for the best sparkplug and brand. I really don't want to get the genuine mercedes plugs for $9 a piece. My original plugs was the bosch w7dc. And yes I did gap the plugs to spec.

Well if you’re only going to change them every 15 years then why not buy the original Mercedes plugs? At $9 each x 8 is $72. Divide $72 by 15 years and it’s just $5 per year to get the maximum performance out of your 500sel. 😉

Oh no I have to change them every 3000 miles, the old sparkplugs are exhausted.

Sorry 10,000 milles these European imports do burn plugs like crazy. What do you expect from German hemi 🤣🤣

But your original post states:

"The 15 year old bosch plugs ran better then the new ones. Top speed on the dyno was 115 when the old plugs pushed it to 140mph."

There was a sticker on the log book for the sparkplugs 02/07/07. And those plugs were discontinued a long time ago so it had to be right. PO never changed them since.

Well I go original plugs. You think nine bucks is much. I worked on a BMW the other days in this spark plugs cost$28 a piece

Thanks Scotty, I really hope the Mercedes
Part is still the same and not "upgraded"

Hey scotty another question, how do I know my ignition coil is worn out. It's old but works do they go bad slowly or they work the same until it stops working at all.

Denso IW20TT - A modern Iridum (TT) Twin Tip sparkplug, that Denso claims to work in your 500SEL.

These are usually in the $10-$15 a piece price range.

The problem is they will burn my ignition module if I use anything besides copper. My bad I should of mentioned that. Anything I search will give me the wrong plug.

The resistors are to limit current (you don't need that much). Otherwise the ignition system turns into a radio transmitter, and the components wear out faster.
