Hey Scotty, what is the best years for used Subaru outback and foresters.

You'd want one newer than the years that had head gasket problems. (In general that problem was solved in the boxer engines that used timing chains instead of belts.) Also Scotty has recommended to avoid the six-cylinder engines.

Also be aware that Subarus have used CVTs for some time now (since around 2010) and the early models definitely had problems. (2018+ are preferable.) For that matter, any Subaru CVT with high mileage should be treated as suspect especially since the company has stood firm on it's "lifetime fluid" nonsense, at least in the United States, so most of them have likely never been serviced. (Manual transmission models are preferable.)

Subarus also tend to eat front drive axles because the inner drivers are very close to the exhaust system, however that is a minor consideration compared to a failed CVT.
