Bmw X5 28i or Toyota Rav4 Prime.

Hey Scotty, I am looking at a new car, preferably used. I went to both dealerships to test drive both vehicles and liked how the x5 drove better than the Toyota. I also like how the X5's interior/ exterior looks. I asked the BMW dealership about reliability, and they said the x5 28i was very reliable. Should I believe them or should I just save money and buy the Rav4 Prime?

You found the least trust worthy people to ask, maybe the mean:

Very reliable money makers for the service department!

Should I believe them

Never believe a dealer!

save money and buy the Rav4 Prime?

Why? the RAV4 Prime is one of the only PHEVs that don't make sense. An extra $10,800 for just 40 mile EV range? Doesn't make sense for most people, unless your commute is under 15 miles! AND you have a charger at your home.

Consider a new regular RAV4 Hybrid, it is cheaper and for most people, better.

If you end up buying that used BMW, get ready for $$$$ bills.

I guess that's as unbiased a source as one could ask for. :silly:

You have decide what you want - the exciting "BMW experience" which includes frequent and hefty repair bills, or the boring "Toyota experience" where it just runs for years and years with little or no drama. Your money, your choice.

Well, I think you are asking questions from the wrong party.

Save your money and go for the RAV4 Prime. If you truly want the BMW experience, just lease one and return before the warranty expires.  But, never, ever, buy a German vehicle - lease only!

Well, what do you want?

BMW will be a better driving experience, look & feel better, but comes at a price (a big one at that). Will not last as long.

RAV4, rather boring car, will need repairs less frequently, and they'll be less expensive too. Will easily last twice as long as the BMW.

I love the BMW X5. I think it is one of the best performance and most comfortable mid-sized SUV’s on the market. For the most part, I consider them reliable. BUT, they do cost an arm, leg, and torso to maintain, especially as they age. I owned one for four years, from 160K miles to 200K miles, and spent more maintaining it in those four years, than 20+ years of my other car.

I think the latest generation RAV4 hit the mark. If you look at it, it kinda resembles an X5 from the side, especially with the infamous BMW kink in the rear side window.

It’s based on the Camry platform, so it is projected to be reliable.

I drive the hybrid version regularly, and I suspect it drives similar to the Prime. And it drives fine. It’s no BMW X5, but the RAV4 is reliable and allegedly cheaper to maintain.

With the BMW, is it an X5 or an X3? I don’t remember the X5 in the 28i trim, but there are so many iterations, I may have missed it.

Do you have a specific link for the trim of car you test drove? What model year are you looking? Just want to look over the specs to yield some insight.
