Brake fluid copper

Topic starter

Being in Texas I had to take my 2011 Chevy Avalanche in for an inspection. They said that I need to change the brake fluid because the fluid had a high copper level in it. Admittedly, I don't drive it that much but I do change the oil, keep the tank topped off and the battery topped off. Is the copper in the fluid really a "thing"? Thanks.

If you do an internet search for "copper in brake fluid" you will find in less than 10 seconds that is, and that it is an indicator of corrosion in the brake system due to anti-corrosion additives in the fluid being depleted. When this happens the brakes need to be flushed out with fresh fluid.

I found this page very informative.

And these relatively inexpensive test strips can test for copper corrosion.
