Why would a car have a bumpy ride?

Hi Scotty!

I just test drove a 2014 Ford Escape Titanium. It has just over 125k miles on the 1.6ltr turbo with an automatic transmission. Everything looks and sound good for the age and mileage etc except that when I drove it I bounced down the road. The steering is tight and it doesn't wobble like a bad wheel or tire. I can't for the life of me figure out why it would bounce.

The only thing I can relate it to is when I drove tractor\trailer and would hit a long stretch of concrete highway. There is a seam every 10 or 15 feet and I would bounce in my driver's seat the same way. At least then I knew what the cause was. No idea why a four wheeler would bounce like that. Any suggestions?

I would pass it by.

Although I do appreciate the feedback. I do not appreciate a blanket response tellling me to just forget it. My budget is limited as well as the time left on my pre-approval so I need to make a decision. If this is an easy fix, I may still purchase the car so any actual information about the problem that I've explained would be more helpful. Thanks.

@mrbraae Did you even check out the link for car complaints.com that @chucktobias provided for you?

I'm actually still curious as to why I would bounce up and down in the driver's seat

Over inflated tyres, bad shocks, or it may have been pimped by snoop dog..?

You can buy it, but given the history of that model you may well be buying into a heap of trouble over and above the problem you are describing. The transmissions on those cars are garbage and Ford's turbo engines are nothing to write home about either. (Will your budget stretch to installing a new transmission, engine, or both while you're making payments?)

Have you had a mechanic do a thorough pre-purchase inspection? That should be considered essential when buying any used car. Maybe the thing was in an accident and the suspension is messed up, or maybe some crappy Chinese quick struts were installed when the OEM ones wore out and now it rides like crap. You won't know until a mechanic looks at it.

Make sure you have an extra $5k in your pocket for when the transmission blows. (and good life insurance policy, because it will come to SCREECHING halt)

I wouldn't touch it with a 20 ft pole.

Well thanks to this forum, I decided against purchasing the Ford. Rest assured that you all stopped me from making a possibly big mistake. Too bad too because I really liked the car otherwise. YES avalon04, I did check out the link and I read a lot on that site but that still doesn't change the fact that when I ask for some specific help about a specific problem, all I get is a oh, don't buy that car.....

I'm actually still curious as to why I would bounce up and down in the driver's seat when driving a four wheeler but I guess that can remain a mystery since I didn't buy the car.
