My 2012 Elantra 130k automatic GLS stalled while driving. Per mechanic I need a new engine. Used one $5k and new one $8k. Per the mechanic there are no other issues with the Elantra. I know used car prices are through the roof right now. I found a 2004 Rav4 manual with only 173k for $6k. Should I dump the Elantra and explore used cars? My goal was really to keep the Elantra for another year or two and then get something newer. I have only put basic maintenance into it oil changes, tires, battery and new starter, over the past 5 years. The used engine option only has 50k miles.
IT was diagnosed with Timing chain tensioner failure. It stalled at a red light and wouldn't restart.
I would get a second opinion on the engine replacement, but if you end up engine replacement, I would dump the Hyundai, since the next thing that can go out is the transmission.
