Scotty, I have a Cadillac SRX 2011 with a 3.0 engine. My wife was driving down the road and the Battery Saver Active light came on and the car shortly after began to lose power. I put a charger on the battery overnight (10Hrs) but the charge failed. After that I jump started the car with another vehicle and the car came on but only remained running for one minute and shut down while driving. Your thoughts?

Doesn't that kind of suggest that the battery is bad? Have you had it load tested? (Might as well test the alternator as well.)
I need a inexpensive aftermarket preferably something that will not break the bank.
An inexpensive aftermarket alternator is going to be a real gamble, especially these days with the low overall quality of replacement parts. OEM is the best bet. Rockauto.com shows a "GM Genuine" new alternator for your 3.0 V6 at a price of about $182. That's only about $36 more than the cheapest rebuilt alternator they offer.
@chucktobias thanks for the reply.
You didn't say what you were looking for, but I'm assuming your battery is bad. All automotive batteries are manufactured by only a few corporations. AutoZone, etc. buys them and they slap their own branding on the cover of the battery. I bought a battery at Wal-Mart for my 1979 Pontiac Catalina 4 years ago, for $50. I was out with a friend three years ago and the fuel pump went out without me noticing. We were in a very bad location to break down. I tried to start that car so many times over the following three hours, the battery died. I called a tow truck, one arrived, when he got it home, I put the battery on the charger. I replaced the fuel pump, and it still runs like a scaled ape, and on that same Wal-Mart battery.
Well, I found out what was causing my car to shut down all of a sudden. I need a inexpensive aftermarket preferably something that will not break the bank. Any suggestion/name brands will be appreciate it.
Rebuilt and re-manufactured alternators have high failure rates. Don't but one of those. Instead buy a new ACdelco unit part #13520825.
@hixster thanks for the reply.

Thanks.
@bb-h Please keep all information about a particular car problem together under the same topic. Thank you. (Topics merged.)
@Chuck Tobias. Can you be more specific?
@bb-h "I found out what was causing my car to shut down all of a sudden" - this should have been posted as a followup to the original topic of your car shutting down since you have now discovered the source of that problem.
@Chuck Tobias. Thanks for the heads up. How do I follow up to a topic from me asking a question?
@bb-h You simply add a new answer under your original topic with the updated information, in this case that you found the source of the problem. (This also has the effect of pushing your topic back up to the top of the topic list.) The reason for this is so we don't have to go chasing all over the board to find all the information about a particular car problem.
Understood.
