Can a 2001 Honda Accord engine fit in a      2000 subaru outback legacy limited sedan

No - it would require MAJOR modification.

It’d cost much more than buying a junkyard Subaru engine, probably even more than probably a 2010 Subaru - and it probably will never work correctly.

It would be easier to fit a Mustang 5.0 V8 into a Saab 900. (In other words, NO.)

I highly doubt an Accord engine can fit in a Subaru without serious modification. 

Subaru’s are boxer engines. Accord is an inline engine.  

The closest engine that might have a chance of fitting is a Porsche boxer engine, but that is still a long shot.
