It's rated I think for any fuel over 87.  But I believe it's Ethanol, so not sure how that works

Are you talking about ethanol percentage or octane? E88 would be 88% ethanol, but regular gas in most places is 87 octane (10% ethanol, E10) and most cars will run OK on that octane or higher. So which do you mean?

Unleaded 88 (I presume that’s what OP really means) is E15 or 15% ethanol/85% gas.

E88 contains 15% ethanol and 85% gasoline which compared to normal gas (87 octane) has higher octane rating. In your car, you don't get benefit by using that over the normal gas.

OK guys, E88 is a new one on me - if it has 15% ethanol people need to check their owner's manual to see what concentration of ethanol the vehicle can tolerate. Excepting flex-fuel vehicles, most will say not to use gas with more than 10% ethanol.

The feds say you'll be fine.

I wouldn't trust what the politicians and bureaucrats say, they basically know nothing and just make "facts" up out of whole cloth to suit their agenda. With any technical issue they may not even realize that they are lying.

The OP may be conflating octane with ethanol concentration (I'd never heard of "E88" either), but in any event it is best to stick with manufacturer's recommendation which in most cases is going to be a maximum of 10% ethanol. The feds won't pay for your voided warranty or corroded fuel system.

Oh I'm sure they have plenty of well paid labs and experts at their disposal. The real problem, IMO, is that they have an agenda.

If you click the link I posted and see the further details, you will see that E15 is approved by auto makers for some models.

The problem is their labs and experts are paid to find results that support the agenda! It's safest to ignore the politicians and go with the manufacturers' recommendations. If the manufacturer says E15 is OK that's all well and good, but that's not the case for most.

I've never heard of E88.

There is something called Unleaded 88, and you can read about it here:

The feds say you'll be fine. I think you should call Toyota corporate and ask them what they think about it, and then come back here and tell us about it.
