Is it safe to drive a car till the gas light comes on? Im trying to determine gas mileage for km per liter used. I heard the light comes on with tank has 50km left.

Thanks

Realize that the fuel in the tank cools the fuel pump. You have to determine if splitting hairs is more important than the life of your fuel pump.

the LOW FUEL Indicator is really just a guesstimate to how many more miles you may go until it conks out.   No one can say as a surety exactly how much. if you wanted to test your car just have a gas can with you, drive it till the indicator comes up - note odometer and drive it till it drops.  You have your real world data now. But as far as driving while the indicator light is on...it is just an indicator which comes on when a certain resistance is measured at the tank sending unit which triggers the Gas LOW warning light to come on. its just an additional gadget for the driver instead of checking the gas gauges THEN running out of gas.

I agree with the above comment. Also it is not a good idea to run on low fuel since you may burn out your fuel pump.

I've heard that old nugget too, but I drove all my cars for hundreds of thousands of miles, and I never cared about the fuel level, and the original fuel pumps never failed. I haven't replaced a single one.

Maybe you are a lucky man but I would not risk it. If it fails, you will be stranded in the middle of nowhere waiting for a tow truck. It really does not worth it.

My light comes on when I have 100km left. Sometimes it comes on when I'm going uphill and then turns back off when go back down. Obviously this is poor method.

The right way to calculate your economy is to fill your tank until the pump shuts off automatically. If you do that every time, then the volume on the pump is the exact amount your engine used.

I accidentally drove with out realizing I was low on fuel and didn’t even realize the low gas light was on. It was below E.

When I realized, I drove extremely conservatively until I could get to a gas station which was 15 miles away.

When I filled up, it topped off at 14.2 gallons.  I looked up the tank size, and it said 15 gallons.

My guess is there is about a gallon of fuel in my car when the gas light comes on

only a guess.  Yours may vary.

Luckily I made it.
