Hey Scotty.. huge fan! My starter is giving me big problems heat soaking. 1986 F150 302 Automatic. Factory exhaust and setup. I've installed the DEI Versa Shield wrap but didn't slow it down at all. Will wrapping the exhaust pipe help any you think? Does the starter just become junk after it's been zapped by heat the 1st time? Will buying new/better quality starter help? Don't want to spend time/money replacing starter if not going to fix it when starter i have fires great. How about the micro size starters? Where do I buy those? Any tips and thoughts are greatly appreciated! You are the man!!!
Well first get a good micro size starter because it's smaller and further away from the exhaust and two. Yes wrapping the exhaust does a lot. I would wrap it with heat shield like the race guys. Do they do it to keep heat inside to make more acceleration and power? You're doing it just to stop the heat
This sounds like a defective starter. If it's oem it shouldn't have a problem with heat, IF the exhaust system is stock.
