So I’m from the Houston area and I don’t have a personal trustworthy mechanic. And I’m looking to buy my first used car but I don’t know how the process works. Am I suppose to drive the car from the dealer to the mechanic or does the mechanic go to the dealer and inspect it there.

The usual course is that you make arrangements with the dealer to take temp possession of the prospective car for sale and drive it to the mechanic who will do the inspection and give you an evaluation. The dealer is not going to have any mechanic use its facilities for inspection work unless its just a cursory visual inspection and thats all.  Thats all for insurance reasons to protect the dealer in case of accidents.  NOW all this I explained can be changed if the dealer agrees to have your mechanic inspect said car at his facility mind you.  You can inquire to the dealer what is the usual procedure to have a third party inspect your prospective sale in detail.  That would be the prudent way to do this.

the mechanic will probably do a better job inspecting in the comfort of his own shop
