Car overheating plz help!!!!

Hi there

I have an audi a4 b7 2006 with 152000 miles on it. In the last few days my car starts to overheating to the 3/4 mark during my drive home.

Something that I noticed is different is that when I start my car the gauge immediately goes to the middle which is odd. Usually in the past it would take a few minutes or let the car idle for about 10mins before it got to the center

Sometimes the gauge will go to the 3/4 mark then slowly go to the middle then right up again. I also noticed something strange, I took the cap off from the coolant and it like filled up to a higher level after releasing the pressure . Normally it right under the max line but when I turned off the car and looked it was closer to the min. Line. This is insane I know I have an old car but I need it to last because times are hard during the pandemic.

This has been happening for about a week now and I dont want to cause serious damage to the car. I don't even feel comfortable driving it unless its a short distance. I don't know what's the issue and I am hoping you guys can help

What do I need a new thermostat? A new coolant sensor? help me get started in the right direction

Thanks in advance

Charlie

don't just throw parts at your problem, because the issue could lie in your wiring or elsewhere. Looks up resistance values for your ECT and test it yourself with a multimeter.

New coolant temperature sensor/sender unit.

Can I use a scan tool to verify that piece is defective? Or is it a relatively cheap part that I can try and chamge to see if the condition improves

Also if it is the CTS wouldn't it trip a code or should I chamge it anyway?

They are relatively cheap and easy to replace.
