Car starts but wont go into reverse.

I have a 2013 chevy malibu eco. My car starts but will not go into reverse. The steering wheel is locked no matter how hard I try to turn it. Also the keys will not come out of the ignition. The car has about 70k miles on it.

On some cars, the ignition switch has 2 screws holding it to the steering column. If loose, the slider section moves out of proper alignment. Then key and steering wheel trouble. There is a rod that goes back and forth. Remove plastic lower panels . Get light. Readjust ignition so as working with key.

Would this explain why the keys also get stuck? And it won't come out of park at all. I didn't know if those details make a difference.

You probably have an interlock between the lock cylinder and the shifter that has failed.

Your transmission is on its way out. Reverse gear is usually the first gear to out on a transmission.

Options are:

  1. Put in remanufactured transmission
  2. Put in junkyard transmission (a gamble)
  3. Junk the car entirely
