catalytic clean

Hello, I watched the video on using lacquer thinner to clean a catalytic converter. You said put 1 gallon in a half a tank of gas. How many gallons of gas is that? I have a Mini Cooper S with a 13.2 gallon gas tank. I don't want to put too much lacquer thinner in my tank. So, how many gallons of gas should I treat with 1 gallon of liquor thinner?

Thanks

So the catalytic converter is obviously dirty.

That is not necessarily the case. (My car at 28 years old with well over 370,000 miles still has its original converter and it's still working fine.) Hopefully you used OEM sensors since aftermarket parts are likely not to work properly.

Although the converter could be the problem there are other possibilities. See the links below for diagnostic information.

As far as the lacquer thinner goes if you have a small tank you can proportionately reduce the dosage from something more typical. For example, a 2009 Camry has an 18.5 gallon tank. Be aware that the stuff can attack plastic and rubber parts in the fuel system so it would probably be a good idea to run through that tank as quickly as possible then refill with fresh gas.

What condition is prompting you to pour lacquer thinner into your gas tank, potentially damaging fuel system components?

@chucktobias I guess you didn't watch Scotty Wilmer's video on Youtube how to clean a cat converter?

If it's the video I'm thinking of it is 14 years old and somewhat out of date. You have not told us the specific symptoms you are experiencing. Why do you want to "clean" your catalytic converter?

@chucktobias Because I have the P0420 code and I have installed new 02 sensors. So the catalytic converter is obviously dirty. I have a 2009 Mini Cooper S. with 195,000 miles.

friend, if you have 195,000 on a mini copper and it still runs I would be very cautious putting anything in the gas tank.. get a new converter or straight pipe it...
