Isnt the upstream O2 before that cat? I believe this is the downstream O2, which just checks the cats efficiency.

Yes, you need the 02 sensor before the converter for proper fuel injection operation. The one after is just to check that the cat is working OK. Of course you'll wind up with a check engine light and codes. Some newer vehicles disable functions like ABS, traction control, cruise control, and other features (some even disable air conditioning!) if there is an emissions problem detected.

Wow, didn't know they disable other functions when there's an emissions error like that, that's insane

The upstream O2 sensor is used to control the fuel injection system. Without it the fuel injection will never go into closed-loop mode and it will run like garbage.

A lot of things can cause misfires aside from coil packs and plugs: bad compression, bad head gasket, leaky or clogged fuel injectors, weak fuel pump, bad fuel filter, vacuum leaks, etc. Live data such as fuel trims may provide a clue.

Ok thank you
