2002 Honda Civic 1.7 155k Miles automatic
The mechanic mentioned to me of which I bought this car from, that he would not change the tranny fluid, because these Honda cars are sensitive. Now I just noticed the trans fluid was low by almost 2 qts and may have been like that for like 2 years. Anyways will changing maybe just half of the fluid or a 3rd cause an issue???
One quart low likely would not be a big deal. I would suggest doing a drain and fill at least, and get it topped up to the right level. Check and see what the fluid looks like, at that point it should be better.
After a week or two of no issues, I would do another drain and fill. Doing the filter would be a good idea as well.
It isn't so much that Hondas are sensitive as it is too many miles to change it out. Transmission fluid changes are generally every 5 years/60k miles.
You can add fluid to it, but I would not swap it out at this point. Especially if it has been running low.
2002 Honda Civic 1.7 Automatic 155,000 miles
I bought this car for 1400$ few days ago. Seems to run good other than a issue with cam sensor I'm trying to fix. Anyways
I kept checking the trans fluid and noticed it was reading NOTHING on the dipstick. Mechanic I bought car from looked underneath and said it was dry, no leaks. I finally went to Honda bought some fluid. And after a lil after a quart has been put it. It's now reading on the dipstick that it's full.
How the heck could the tranny have been shifting and running fine being so low wtf.
This is the color of the fluid. It's like a light brown kinda. This is the color after topping the fluid off.
I haven't really noticed any shifting issues
So would changing out maybe another quart of fluid cause as issue? Like just drain it, clean drain plug. And put in 1qt of clean fluid?
I want to maintain this vehicle, I want it to last as long as possible.
Yes if there are no red or brownish leaks on the ground, and also no wet gunked up areas under the car that lead to a visible wet area on any of the transmission housing edges - it is likely not leaking. It could've been something as silly as someone didn't put the transmission cap on all the way and some of it evaporated over time.
Trans fluid should be red (typically) - if it was more brown colored fluid coming to the top as you added the quart - some transmission fluids naturally brown over time - and as long as their viscosity seems fine and there are no metal debris shavings it is likely fine with low mileage at 155k (for a Honda).
I agree with nlord for the most part. If it was me, this is what I'd do (but I'm a shade tree mechanic):
1 > Order new trans filter and your 3qts of Fluid you'll need.
2 > Drain the trans fluid into a CLEAN container, drop the trans pan and inspect the magnet.
a > If the magnet has A LOT of metal debris on it AND there is visible metal in the fluid:
> Clean magnet off, insert new filter (and gasket if applicable).
> Refill the trans with the old fluid, and top off whatever is left with new fluid.
b > If the magnet is clean and fluid doesn't have a lot of metal debris in it
> Dispose of old fluid & refill with new fluid
If there is a lot of debris, changing the fluid out completely will cause the transmission to start slipping and having issues. BUT, being it is a Honda, I highly doubt it will have any transmission issues - but draining the old fluid, new filter, and new fluid will be a great thing to do if it is still a healthy transmission. Be aware, the magnet may have a little bit of metal shavings on it from the transmission breaking in when new - but it should not have a thick coating of metal on the magnet.
Just my $0.02, but I'd verify what I've said with some more experienced people here and also consult Scotty's videos - as he has a few episodes covering this topic as well.
