How do I fix GMC Sierra EVAP system trouble code P0440

I have an 2002 GMC Sierra truck and my check engine light stays on. I had it scanned and the code P0440 showed up. Mileage is 149,231 and it's an automatic. The gas cap looks fine to me, but then I don't know much about cars or trucks.  I do smell a very faint gasoline smell sometimes when standing outside of my truck. Problem is I am financially struggling and I would like to know is this problem going to cost a lot and can I continue to drive with this happening? I have had other problems with this truck, so I'm trying to fix one thing at a time. The truck has been in my family for a long time and I would hate to get rid of it. Of course I don't want to get ripped off with a mechanic around here, so I found your channel (subscribed btw 😁) I love your videos Scotty and you are so much fun to watch! Thank you!! 😊

If you smell gas outside the truck, you definitely have a problem with your evaporative emissions system. Though it could be a number of not-cheap problems to fix, you should probably replace your 20 year old gas cap before doing anything else. Gas caps are cheap and easy to do yourself.
