Chevy P-30 Tachometer only works when the engine is dying???

Hello everyone, I have a 1977 RV built on the Chevy P-30 chassis. Whenever I run the engine I get no reading of the RPM from the tach, but when I click the key to the off position, as the engine is dying it will show RPM for a second. When I click it back to the On position however, it snaps back down to zero RPM… I’m just trying to wrap my head around this thing 🤣. Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated lol.

It sounds like a wiring issue. Is it a aftermarket tach or OEM. What brand and how many wires.  When I did my tach in my 03 spec v I accidentally mixed up the power and illumination wire and had a tach that didn't work properly.
