Clunk sound in steering

Hey Scotty. I drive a 2009 Subaru outback with a manual transmission. There's a clunking sound in the steering that only appears after about 45 mins of driving. I had a mechanic do a visual inspection but he says he can't see anything obvious. Could it be something that heats up and expands?

When does it clunk? When turning left? Turning right? When you wiggle the wheel? Over bumps? At a standstill?

Seems to be when turning both left and right. But only after a while of driving which is weird.

If not in the steering itself, keep in mind that Subarus tend to eat front drive axles since the inner joints are close to the exhaust system.

Use a turkey baster. Suck out as much of your power steering fluid as you can. Replace it with new. Especially if it’s never been replaced. See how it does then.

Thanks, I will try that.
