Hey scotty, I got a 1999 dodge ram 1500 with a 5 speed automatic transmission and the 5.9L Magnum engine as my first truck and runs like its fresh out of the shop with 212K miles. But I noticed that when I put it in reverse it makes a clunking noise as it engages in, and it only does it in reverse. it shifts smoothly, has never slipped, and engages perfectly into the rest with no noise. Do ya have any idea what it could be? I know my fair share about cars but this one has me stumped. Thanks
Check the u-joints and if it has a 2 piece drive-shaft check the carrier bearing. could be other things, but that's where I'd start given the age and mileage.
i had to replace all the U-joints when i got it. carrier bearing im not sure on so ill give it a check. thanks
