2008 BMW 328i auto steam pouring out from under the hood

Hi Scotty,

I have a 2008 BMW 328xi e92 automatic. I have owned it for a little bit over a year now. I drove it today for like an hour then all of the sudden steam was coming from under the hood. When I checked I saw coolant coming out from the right side of the coolant reservoir. I think it cracked for some reason. Should I just replace the reservoir or should I worry about other things that made it crack?

Note: I replaced thermostat and water pump a month after I bought it. I am not sure if the reservoir was changed before or not.

Thank you

Are you sure it's cracked? Some reservoirs have an overflow port.

You beat me to it! I knew it must’ve been overheating..

You’d really want to have it looked at by a mechanic who specialises in BMWs. If it’s not just a cracked reservoir, the repairs can be astronomical thanks to the cheap plastic which BMW uses.

If it was a crack causing the steam, then just replace the reservoir. The plastic probably got old and couldn't handle the pressure anymore. Replace and bleed the coolant system with BMW's built-in bleed procedure.
