Hello Scotty, my dad is interested in buying a new car from the dealership. We went to a Toyota dealership and we loved the way the new Corrola Apex looks and the manual version is within his budget, however I heard people online were not impressed with it, I was hoping to get your opinion on it. And if we should consider a civic instead Thank You, I really enoy your youtube channel by the way.

Well, we had the chance to get the Apex, but we chose the Corolla SE with the black accents. Some of the things we weren't really looking for so it made no difference. We still got the same 169hp engine and manual trans. Looks very close to the Apex with some slight difference, but that's ok. I felt it rides better on the street than the Apex.

Side note; we traded a '18 Civic Sport 6spd manual for it. Not thrilled with the oil dilution Honda's 1.5 turbo engines have, didn't know about it when we bought it 3 yrs ago. The Civic has more pep from a stop because of the turbo. Took a couple of weeks learning curve to get used to the Corolla but now it's second nature.

Yep, friends of mine that are into Hondas really hate the new Civics…
It’s not just the engine issues, many people complain about their CVTs prematurely failing…
In Europe it’s at that point where when someone wants a sporty hatchback I just recommend the new 2021 Peugeot 2008 Diesel (yes, that’s a terrible model name)

somehow Stellantis managed to make them reasonably reliable (with ford engines and Toyota transmissions) and even nicer to sit in then Hondas…
I really hope FCA won’t drag down PSAs recent season reliability renaissance…

We don't like CVT's at all, no matter who make the. The engineering has a looooong way to go to improve reliability in CVT's. That's why the Civic was a 6spd. If it wasn't for that damn oil dilution, we'd still have it. But at our last oil change, I pulled the dipstick and it was like black ink rather than oil.

The Corolla Apex is a good especially with a manual.

The 2.0L “DynamicForce” engine is a bit less reliable then the older “ZR-Series”, but it is still better then Honda’s earth dreams as Honda has been having some issues with those.

Often car reviews and people online are too busy comparing cars and critiquing every flaw and often skip talking about reliability.

the Corolla is probably less fun to drive then the Civic and probably lacks the things that draw many people to choose the Mazda3.

all of the cars I mentioned here are well built cars, in my personal opinion the most reliable is the Mazda3 (the SkyActive engine is objectively better built then the DynamicForce and lasts longer)

And the most fun to drive is probably a high trim of the Civic,

but the Corolla is a good compromise in between.

TBH, it just boils down to your personal preference.
