Good afternoon everyone. I'm not sure if its the same with any other vehicle but could someone explain why it is with the 7th generation Honda Civics if the water pump itself needs replacement why the timing belt also needs replacing? It was today my cousin needed the water pump replaced he has an 02 Honda Civic the people said he would not only need the pump replaced but the timing belt does as well.... If the timing belt is fine why would it need replacement as well? It's the pump itself that needs it...
Hello, What size motor is in your Civic. The 2002 Civic could have a 1.3 liter or 2.0 liter which have timing chains,the 1.7 liter has a belt. But if it was me while in the motor I would change the belt. If it has one

I can't speak to that particular vehicle, but all the ones I am familiar with it is labor intensive to get to the timing belt so you always replace the water pump while you are in there. In this case, the reverse is true. Why not replace the belt now, while doing the pump, rather than have to go through all that work again down the road just for the belt...
Agreed, and if the water pump went bad, and it has a timing belt, it is likely not far behind. Also keep in mind that lots of hondas have interference engines, I think the 1.7 does. If the timing belt breaks, it would likely cause thousands in repairs. Best to spring for the small amount for the timing belt, and you can have peace of mind for a good while.
People do both just because since you took all that stuff off to replace the pump you might as well do the belt also. Why do twice the work or pay twice as much for them/you to do almost the same thing.

I just replaced my timing belt on my 1999 Honda Accord, and did the water pump while I was at it. I’m not a mechanic. It was a pain in the ass to get under there. I wouldn’t want to tear everything apart to get to either of those again. It was a pain in the add to get under there. So I just replaced both. Did I mention it was a pain in the ass?
Thats why they recommend doing both together.

From what I've read about the 2002 Civic, it has a K-series engine, which has a timing CHAIN.
Must be different with them I have a 2001
