CVT’s question

Topic starter

My son wants to buy a pre-owned car. The CVT in his Nissan Rouge went out at 165k and he is Leary of buying a car with another CVT. He wants a crossover SUV but it seems they all have Jatco CVTs. Are there any crossover SUVs without CVTs or CVTs that won’t break?

my 2012 Nissan Murano went out in 2021 at 159,000 miles. id avoid it.

If you don't buy Nissan products, you will be fine. Toyota makes good CVTs.

Mazda cx5 still uses a 6 speed automatic.

Toyota still has SUVs with traditional automartic transmission.

Which manufacturers are you referring to?  Toyota, Honda, Subaru, for instance, make their own CVTs and are more reliable than the JATCO CVTs used in Nissans (and other vehicles).

Stay away from Nissan and their CVT's and you'll be fine

Your son's experience doesn't mean all CVTs are bad; his was a Nissan and the not good Jatco cvt. Buy a Toyota or Honda and you won't have the same problems with their CVTs.
