Hello everyone!
My new 2006 Matrix (manual, 120k miles) has cylinder glazing going radially around near the top of the cylinder. It is three lines of glazed area with honing between them. Literally It is as if the piston rings are wearing out that part of the cylinder wall as the lines look to resemble the location of piston rings when the piston is at TDC.
I will post a video from my endoscope later. Does anyone have any preliminary ideas? I just bought this car and im hoping to keep it until its got at least 300k miles on it.
Cheers

The engine shakes excessively at idle

Have you replaced your spark plugs? timing belt?
Is the check engine light on?
I have a new set of spark plugs, but having thought that the engine is no good, I put in the old plugs. They looked good. Has a timing chain, I replaced the tensioner assembly. CEL was on for P3501 - P3504 after I had just done the compression test. I didnt unplug the EFI fuse, I guess the excess fuel caused a misfire.
well misfire would cause the engine to shake, so keep an eye on that
what does a cylinder compression test say?
If there's no scoring it's probably fine.
The compression is 190-190-190-205 with the least amount of wear on the cylinder with 205 psi.
Is there anything I can do about the compression?
those are healthy numbers. Maybe you're worrying too much.
The engine shakes excessively at idle as well.
Isnt a difference of 15 psi between cylinders too much?
15 is within 10% which is considered normal. I don't think you would notice it. Your vibration is probably caused by something else. Does it happen in neutral?
You should have started your question with that, instead of trying to work backwards.
Yes, happens at idle in neutral. Also makes a clacking noise like metal on metal ringing, at idle in neutral.
Heres a video of my "endoscopy" for one of the cylinders with 190 psi. The cylinder with 205 has all the same wear, just less of it

Also, there is some orange-brown residue all around and inside the cylinder 1 spark plug hole. What could that have been?
your cylinder wall is beautiful
Thank you Joe, if you dont mind me calling you so. You've given me some ease.
What do you think, will it last 300k miles with preventative and religious maintenance?
It depends on how it was treated for the previous 120k miles of its life, and how you drive it now.
