I have a friend with a 2022 RAV4 Hybrid. Due for its 35,000 mile service which is only a tire rotation. Yes, they take it to the dealer, which I have suggested not to. But they are stuck in the ways.
At the very least, I was able to convince to do an oil change every 5,000 miles instead of every 10,000 miles. Like Scotty and everyone here recommends as an oil change interval.
So in she goes for looking for an oil change and tire rotation. Dealer service advisor tries to upsell to over $1,000 worth of services. She stood her ground, and just asked for the oil change and tire rotation.
Service Advisor looks at the mileage, and says that her oil is synthetic and good for 10,000 miles. That it doesn’t need a change until 40,000 miles. And probably doesn’t even need a “just a tire rotation.”
And sent her on her way.
She was willing to pay the dealer for an oil change and tire rotation. The dealer’s upsell got rejected. So the dealer didn’t even want to do the oil change and tire rotation, that the customer specifically requested.
What gives? It’s like the dealer was turning away a paying customer, but not paying high enough I gather.
Only thing I can think is that oil change is their loss leader, and once she said no to all the bogus things there was no point in continuing.
Or they were just busy and didn’t want to be bothered with small jobs.
didn’t want to be bothered with small jobs.
I think you misspelled "too greedy to be bothered with small jobs"
UPDATE: Friend took her RAV4 Hybrid to another dealer across town. They were willing to do the oil change and tire rotation. But here is the kicker.
They upsold TOTALLY different services:
- Brake Fluid Exchange
- Alignment
- Balancing
Costing almost $500 in total services.
None of which is in the owners manual!!! I recommended her to deny any upsold services. Just do the oil change and tire rotation.
It cost her about a hundred bucks.
Still trying to talk into going to an independent mechanic. But hey, at least she isn’t falling for the upsold unnecessary services.
