Everybody I know who lives in Minnesota has a diptstick heater or a block heater.

what i've used up in Chicago, when I used to live there. was an engine coolant heater. Get a new coolant hose and cut it in half. The halves attach to the heater and circulate warm water through the engine. Keep the hose you take off to put back on in the spring.

Says it needs to be in at least 4 inches of oil... you might not have that... you could use one of these and not worry about it

Most vehicles I've bought up here in Canada came with block heaters.
