Discount VIN check

I am looking at buying a used car and want to get data on the car's history.
Are there sites where I can get discounted VIN checks, sites that sell discounted CARFAX and/or AutoCheck VIN reports, for example?
I read that these two sites are legit resellers for carfax. Is that true?

You cannot count on Carfax and similar services to tell you a car's history because not everything is reported to them. Also their databases are not guaranteed to be up to date and in fact they do not guarantee the accuracy of their information at all.

Although you can use such a report to get a general overview of the vehicle and possibly detect odometer discrepancies, you need a pre-purchase inspection by a good mechanic to determine its actual condition.

(I've never used Carfax or its competitors myself and have no knowledge of the resellers you referenced.)

A quick internet search found some resources:

https://epicvin.com/

https://vinmentor.com/free-vin-check-reports/

(Caveat - I have no personal experience with these.)

Thank you to those who replied. I found an interesting update. The following govt. site lists actual authorized sellers of vehicle history reports, so I can assume all these sites are legitimate... https://vehiclehistory.bja.ojp.gov/nmvtis_vehiclehistory

I can't use Carfax on my 66 Mustang. My shorter VIN number doesn't get accepted. What could I do?
