On some transmission pans, you have to remove the pan itself in order to get to the filter. However, on other transmission pans with a drain bolt in which the fluid comes out when you remove the bolt, do you replace the filter as well?
on which vehicle?
Uh, it depends on what vehicle it is. I watched vids on YouTube of people doing trans fluid changes and with a drain bolt, they don’t replace the filter and just add new fluid. In contrast, I watched vids of fluid changes in which they remove the pan and replace the filter.

The reason that auto transmissions were made without drain plugs originally, the 7004R for example, was because you were supposed to change the filter when you changed the fluid.
