If not, are there any auto part stores that scan cars for free?

Yes, they give you a dongle you connect to your OBDII, and then they print out the information it collected when you go back inside.

Yes, AutoZone will scan check engine light codes for free.

They'll give you an error code printout with unrelated suggested maintenance.
Ask them if they can also print out the freeze frame data from when the code(s) were thrown
