Downshifting

Hey Scotty! Only been watching your channel a few months now but absolutely love it! I'd like to know if and when downshifting is or isn't a good idea. I've been doing it as an aide in braking. Mostly coming off the freeway from 75-80 mph on the off ramp. Is there a general rule of thumb here?

Thanks,

Ed

Hi there,

Using your clutch as a secondary braking system for your car can be done but can result in the clutch wearing out much quicker. Just stick with the brake pedal!

Seconded. Brake pads are much easier to replace than a clutch!

General rule of thumb get used to down shifting unless your in heavy traffic.

as Scotty said, brake pads are cheap, the clutch is expansive. don't downshift when it's unnecessary.
