Will disconnecting the E G R valve increase or decrease the gas mileage?
Maybe I'm "Old School" but I can't understand how contaminating the fuel mixture with exhaust gases is good for an engine.
EGR reduces fuel consumption. Introducing inert gases is the same as shrinking a cylinder when power isn't needed. Removing EGR may cause pinging, especially if the computer is calibrated to have it.
My EGR valve (and maybe most modern ones) are electric.

However, if you're only doing laps at WOT, and then rebuild your engine after. You can remove EGR. You also don't need antifreeze.
i read the article, guess i'll leave it connected. thanks ever so much for the info.
Ostensibly, the EGR system is supposed to lower the combustion chamber temperature and allow pollutants to be reduced by the catalytic converter, thereby cutting down on emissions. They are usually vacuum operated through a valve. I personally think they are snake oil introduced in the 70's when emission controls became really important in somebody's mind. On the early 80's vehicle that I drive, I have removed and blocked off this system and have one less piece of hardware to go bad. Some people think the EGR system makes the car run cooler and therefor better. Like the man said in "Roadhouse" "Opinions vary."
Besides, how many race car engines do you know of that have an EGR valve on them? I don't know of any.
My truck doesn't have a computer or even an OBD port.
