[Solved] How do I adjust my Emergency brake

Topic starter

2015 Ford E-350 5.4 flex fuel dually box truck.  So ever since I had my brakes done by a factory trained professional my emergency brake has not worked. To keep the story short a mechanic found that they failed to readjust the emergency brake after the brake job and unfortunately he adjusted it but not enough for a steep incline so I have been able to find out how to adjust them myself and the driver side is no problem the adjustment hole is readily available for the tool to work properly, unfortunately when it comes to the passenger side,  the adjustment hole is located at the top and the leaf springs are in the way of the tool. I can insert the tool into the hole but I am not able to make any adjustments.  I have tried a straight bit for a drill( basically a small screw driver) and that has failed me. So is there a specific tool sold for the passenger side to make adjustment to the parking brake or is there another way to adjust the passenger side.  I had to use my phones camera to even look into the hole and see the star adjustment wheel it is so difficult to get to.

Remove the wheel and brake drum to access the adjuster.

But why don't you just take it back to the shop that did work? They should fix it.

I took it back to the shop they told me to make an appointment. I can't afford to be outta work because of they can't do their job right the first time. And this is a dually with disc brakes I would have to remove the caliper and rotor and I am not going to do that just to adjust the parking brake when their is a window to the adjustment mechanism. I will never bring my truck back to that shop or any other shops because mechanic's around here are idiots.

Please stop replying to my questions you obviously don't have the answers

You came asking for our help because you don't know the answer. Now suddenly you're an expert?
This is our forum we built, and we can reply to whatever we like. If you don't like it go somewhere else.

You asked if there's a tool, and I posted a link to the only tool that exists for adjusting brakes. So what is your problem now??
I've adjusted many brakes and I think you're looking for answers that don't exist.

@avalon04 obviously I'm at fault here. I should have read his mind to see exactly what he's talking about because he's unable to communicate it effectively and respectfully.

@imperator Yeah after I posted I saw your new response to shaw and so I went back and deleted mine as it felt out of place now. I realize that this may sound odd, but I have been sick with covid for the past 5 days and this is the most that I have laughed since Sunday. The back and forth reminds me of Abbott and Costello's "Who's on First?" Though your and Justin's patient and persistent attempts to help should have been received with gratitude and respect by the OP instead of hostility. By the way, what happened to your "mind reader" thingy?

it's on the fritz again

It's a fairly simple procedure. There's a star gear that widens and retracts the brake shoes. Put wheel chocks down behind the back wheels and ahead of the front wheels. Jack up the van and put it on a jack stand. Place the van in neutral and spin the drum. It should just barely drag on the brake shoes. If you don't feel any resistance at all, move them outwards a click or two until it just barely hangs. Once you've gotten it pretty well adjusted, put the van back on the ground, put it in reverse, back it up and stop firmly a few times. The brakes should self-adjust from there.

I didn't ask hiw to adjust it if you read the question that I asked you might be able to answer it but everyone continues to give information I d9nt need or want

MountainManJoe is an administrator, so you might want to tone things down a bit as far as hostility if I were you. We get it, you're frustrated, but don't take it out on us. We haven't done anything wrong.

What part about the tool not fitting into the adjustment hole did you not understand. I know how to adjust the emergency brake and my problem is the tool will not fit on the passenger side

There's more than one way to skin a cat. You can still manually adjust the brake from the inside, it just takes more time and effort. It's either that, or you make the mechanic do it.

I don't care who anyone is and I don't need an answer that doesn't solve anything. If there's a hole to adjust the brake why would I have to take apart the whole side to fix it. I will not bring it to a mechanic who can't fix it right the first time. Don't answer my questions if you don't have the answer you are waiting everyone's time. Boot me from this site I don't care you don't answer my questions anyway

Arguing with moderators and administrators is unlikely to get you anywhere. The chances are that no one here has ever had to adjust the emergency brake on a 2015 Ford E-350 5.4 flex fuel dually box truck. If dissatisfied with the service here you are welcome to apply for a refund.

If you are unwilling to hold the shop that caused the problem responsible have you ever considered referring to the shop manual for the proper emergency brake adjustment procedure? Of course you realize that if you cannot find the relevant section online or at a library, a short-term subscription to Alldata DIY will give you inexpensive access to all of your vehicle's service information.

you are waiting everyone's time.

People are doing their best they can to help you with the information you provided. Internet troubleshooting is not easy. Nobody knows every single little thing off the tops of their head. Even mechanics sometimes have to figure things out as they go, and we have no idea what you're looking at.

If that isn't to your satisfaction, then you're welcome to your money back, but they absolutely do not deserve to be insulted by you. But I suggest you listen more carefully and be a little more open, when you're in a helpless situation yourself.

You are on extremely thin ice right now. Choose your words carefully ...

I don't claim to be an expert like the people who reply to questions on this page. I am however not a moron that doesn't have simple common sense if you read the question I posted I clearly state that I know how to adjust it and that I have the tool for adjusting it and I stated that I can see the adjusting hole but the lack of room to use the tool is the problem so it would make sense to me that a specific tool was designed for the passenger side.  And why would you suggest I take it to the moron mechanic who didn't fix it correctly the 1st time when this page is about doing the job you're self . Had I asked do you think I can take it back to the shop that performed the work that would have been a great answer. But I'm to stupid to think of that right.

@shaw490 , a significant effort is made by the staff and members here to NOT insult someone who post a question. If this was not true, I would not participate here.

Your right rear brake's star gear can't be adjusted using a standard brake adjustment tool because the leaf spring restricts the tool's movement. You choose not to deal with the shop that created this issue, don't want to take off the rear wheels/brakes or get a temporary subscription to Alldata.

I understand you feel these suggestions were "not answering your question"..

So is there a specific tool sold for the passenger side to make adjustment to the parking brake or is there another way to adjust the passenger side.

Well, no. No specific tool is made than I can find which will adjust only the passengers side rear parking brake.

Have you considered bending/manipulating or improving a standard adjustment tool?
