Do engine cleaners work that you see at the auto parts stores?

The engine oil you use already has detergents and additives that clean the engine. It's actually a very good thing when your engine oil turns a dark color; it means that the detergents are catching and holding on to sludge for it to be removed with the oil. As long as you're doing regular oil changes, you shouldn't need to add any extra additives.
Good name brand ones work (like Liqui Moly), but it's not necessary.
