Google search indicates engine oil has a typical shelf life of 5 years. Aside from possible age of the oil would you reconsider buying engine oil from someone selling it at a discounted price say at a swapmeet? I've never paid attention but it's there a date printed in the oil?

Why take the chance? You can get a five quart jug of synthetic motor oil at WalMart for about $20.
