My engine is a ford 351 Cleveland with a quickfuel 750cfm carburetor (no choke). It starts up but will die unless if keep pumping the throttle. What could my problem be?
Clogged fuel filter, ruptured accelerator pump diaphragm, clogged idle circuit jets, incorrect float setting, lots of possibilities. When was the carb last rebuilt? The ethanol in today's gas can cause problems for carbureted vehicles that haven't had the rubber parts replaced with the Viton parts.
Rebuilt 1 year ago. Not by me.
Who did the "rebuild?" Experienced mechanic, a guy in his garage with only a #2 Phillips screw driver and a Crescent wrench?
Guy was experienced. Don't know what has gone wrong. Worked perfectly all last summer and fall.. it was started just a handful of times during the winter
What has worked for me sometimes is to turn the idle mixture screw(s) in and count the number of turns. Remove them and spray some carb cleaner into the orifices to make sure they're clean. If the idle jets are externally accessible, remove them and do the same. Many times I've found debris stuck in the idle jets.
