Engine stress

Hi Scotty,

What's your opinion about small engines with turbos? What do you think about tuning cars for more hp and torque? I have a VW GTI manual.

Thanks, big fan, even if you only like Toyota and Honda.

Even if well built, probably wont last as long as N/A counterparts (Though I'm okay sacrificing some longevity for a more fun driving experience depending on the car)

Not a good idea for long life. Youre asking the engine to put out more power than designed for, and alot of tuners dont fully know what theyre doing anyway from what ive seen, they end up making pretty unreliable tunes. If you find someone who knows what theyre doing then yeah it'll make more power, but at the cost of longevity. Gains usually arent much until you start adding bolt ons on, but again if you upgrade turbo, fueling, etc. to make alot more power, then youre going to bend a rod, or have some serious bottom end failure. Definitely wouldnt tune if the car has a warranty.

That's all general info, look at forums for you platform specifically and see what people are doing/ have done there.

Please don't get a crackle tune

In theory, the idea is that a turbo 4cyl can get 4cyl gas mileage under light loads, but V8 power under heavy loads, so trying to get the best out of both worlds.
