Engine tap noise( lifters)

Hey Scotty,

I have a 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe 2.7, 132,000mi, its a automatic and has no obdii DTC. Question is that is there a quick fix to these hydraulic lifters or is it has to be taken apart, measure the clearance, adjust it or replace the parts. It only makes the tapping noise on start ups and low rpm, other than that it runs fine. I have been doing all the maintenance myself from engine oil to transmission to all the way to transfer case and differentials.

You can try a oil additive but if the lifter is bad it won’t matter what you do. Rocker arm needle bearings can go bad too and cause a ticking noise.

A light lifter tap is not a serious problem. I've had one that comes and goes for the 10 years I've owned my car and it has over 2.5 times the miles on it that yours does.

As long as it doesn't tap all time, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Look up projectfarm on YouTube. Look for his video of seafoam in his 1988 Ford Ranger. That seemed to help his engine a lot.
