Why are so many companies including the Japanese brands chasing these High EPA fuel economy numbers yet making their cars more difficult to even change the oil?
Because these are the guys making the rules. They know what's best for everybody.
They're complying with the increasingly insane stringent EPA mileage requirements because they have no choice, unless all the car companies want to band together and stage a revolt. (Not going to happen.) Cars become more difficult to work on due to the complexity of the otherwise useless technologies employed in meeting those requirements, combined with a drive to make them as cheaply as possible regardless of the effect it has on serviceability.
Insane was the correct term. Anyway, people still go out and buy new cars despite all of this. I'll keep my 02 Mustang GT for as long as I can. Not sure about my 14 Xterra - have you seen where they mounted the alternator?

Seriously. Even though these brand new cars have some nice and fancy features, they’ve made simple things a pain in the <rear>.
I feel like all the added stuff for government <profanity removed by mod> has slowly crept up, leading to much of these insanity.
