[Solved] ESP\ASR check engine light

Hello,

I have a 2004 Renault Megane Sport.

It's a 2.0L gasoline turbo charged car. F4RT Renault engine 225hp 165KW. 6 speed manual transmission. I have been the owner since 2019. I am the third owner of the car. The second owner is my best friend and has been the owner since 2009. The car has a little under 100K miles (156K KM) on the odometer. I only do about 6k Miles a year (10K Kilometers). I change the oil and all filters (oil, intake, cabin) at 6k miles (10k KM), or after about 11 months. The timing belt was changed when I bought it, and the V-belt + tensioner were changed recently as well. I do it myself and make sure it's done right. (timing belt was done at a trusted mechanic)

The ESP\ASR check engine light came up today. Some background info is that yesterday there was heavy snowfall and I had to drive in this snow storm while they were putting slat on the roads. The light first came on when I pulled out of the garage. The brakes were sticky because of the salt, and it is an underground garage. I turn off the car and turned it back on. The light went away, and i drove for about 5 minutes. While turning at a roundabout it came back on. It always goes away when i turn off the car, and comes back when i start to move the car. The engine runs perfect, and i couldn't see anything leaking.

I don't have a scan tool, and my trusted mechanic is away for the weekend. My question is what can it be, and if I can still drive the car to the store and whatnot. I'm pretty good with my hands, and I try to do everything myself within my capabilities.

(I have a video of it happening, but i don't know how to upload it here)

Thanks in advance,

Alex M.

Generally you can drive them perfectly fine. Those are just a head-on system. I snow affects them, especially ones that have a lot of mileage on them. Here in the states when those systems break most people just give up. They don't spend a fortune fix on them

Ok thank you very much 🙂
