EU Volkswagen and US Volkswagen build quality

Hey Scotty!
I find it interesting that vw is viewed as unreliable in the US,
where here in Europe they tend to be seen as reliable vehicles with solid build quality.
Especially the old tdi's.

My father has a 2004 vw touran 1.9 tdi with 367 000 km's (230 000 miles) that still runs like a clock despite the lack of care and maintenance it gets! And a friend of mine has a 2012 Skoda Octavia 2.0 tdi with 284 000 km's (177 500 miles).

Could it be that vw's meant for the states are built cheaper and worse than the one's in Europe?
Greetings from Belgium!

That’s correct.

The ones built in Europe are much better made. Especially with a diesel, VAG cars can run for a long time..

Yeah… I mean they sell gas powered ones here too with those fancy DSG transmissions - those just don’t last.
In Europe the consensus is that if you want a car you’re planing on driving a lot - you get a diesel.

Besides the build quality, the parts are way cheaper in Europe and mechanics know how to work on them.

In N.A., VW is like this

When it comes to longevity of Toyota's engines, it is quite opposite.
